Arnold Vernon Casperson was born December 2, 1922, to Vern and Ervilla (Jensen) Casperson near Dunlap, Monona County, Iowa. He started his schooling in Dunlap, he then moved with his family to Merrill, Iowa for one year before returning to Dunlap where he attended various country schools and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1940. Arnold then attended a school in Omaha to learn how to build airplanes. He then moved to Columbus Ohio to build fighter planes. On October 3, 1942, Arnold married Ruth Ann Kirk in Newport, Kentucky and the couple then lived in Columbus, Ohio. They moved to Omaha in 1943 and Arnold worked for Union Pacific Railroad. Arnold then went to work for a laundry in Omaha. The couple moved to Dunlap in 1945. In 1949 they purchased a farm northwest of Dunlap. They retired from farming and then for eight years Arnold worked for Wats Telemarketing in Omaha. The couple moved to town in October of 1997.
Arnold was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He served on the church council for many years. He also served as a school board member, on the Crawford County Farm Bureau, Crawford County Cattlemen's & Marketing, Boyer Township Trustee, and Dunlap Community Club. He was most recently on the Harrison County Zoning Committee.
Arnold died on Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 85 years and 25 days.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Billy Casperson. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Casperson of Dunlap, Iowa; son, Tony Casperson of Monroe, Washington; daughter, Karen and her husband Wayne "Doc" Melby of Dunlap, Iowa; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
