Bernadette Elaine Leinen was born December 30, 1934, to James and Ruth (McEvoy) McHugh near Moorhead, Iowa. She was raised near Woodbine and Moorhead and attended country school in both areas. Bernadette married Nick Leinen on January 11, 1953. The couple lived in Woodbine, Ida Grove, Sac City, Dow City and Dunlap. Bernadette worked at Blue Star Foods in Council Bluffs and cleaned Murphy's Bar in Dunlap. Nick died in June of 1989.
Bernadette enjoyed scratch off tickets, playing the lottery, cooking, and canning. She also enjoyed taking her canned goods and other things to the Four County Fair. She especially loved her grandchildren.
Bernadette died on February 17, 2016, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 81 years, one month, and 18 days.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nick; companion of 24 years, Terry Frazier; daughter, Debbie and her husband Marvin "Bub" Ulmer; grandson, Nickolas Leinen; and nine siblings. She is survived by her children, Dennis (Denise) Leinen of York, NE, Dan (Bridget) Leinen of Woodbine, IA, Duane Leinen of Dunlap, IA, Darlene (Darrell) Bissen of Denison, IA, Donna (Jim) Krajicek of Denison, IA, Dorothy (Dave) Stehr of Boyer, IA, Deanna (Paul) Laubscher of Dow City, IA; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Richard McHugh of Columbus, NE; and many other relatives and friends.
