Bernard H. Kenkel, Jr. was born on January 30, 1930, to Bernard Sr. and Caroline (Mumm) Kenkel in Dunlap, Iowa. He was raised in Dunlap and attended St. Joseph Catholic School. The family moved to Woodbine when he was a fifth grade and he graduated from Woodbine High School in 1948. Bernie then began farming until he was drafted into the US Army. He served on the front line in Korea. After his honorable discharge he worked road construction and continued to farm. In 1966, Red, Leo and Bernie purchased the Woodbine Elevator. Leo later sold his interest to Bernie and Red and the two continued to operate the elevator for forty years.
Bernie was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Weiss American Legion Post # 143 and a lifetime member of the Woodbine VFW. Bernie loved to golf and has had three holes in one. Bernie enjoyed singing and being with his family. Bernie liked to keep up on the grain markets and following sports.
Bernie died Thursday, January 21, 2016, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa at the age of 85 years, 11 months, and 22 days.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; siblings and siblings-in-law, Gerald (Fern) Kenkel, Pauline (James) Kaster, Edward Kenkel, Mary Ann Kenkel, Monica Kenkel, Arlene Kenkel; and nephews, Terry Kenkel and John Kenkel. He is survived by three siblings, Leo Kenkel, Don "Red" Kenkel both of Woodbine, Iowa, Marjorie (Mike) Calder of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Lee Ann Kenkel of Pawleys Island, South Carolina; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
