Betty Murphy

January 2, 1937 — May 24, 2019

Omaha

Betty Rae (Barry) Murphy was born January 2, 1937, to Dale and Willa (Thomas) Barry in Woodbine, Iowa. She was raised near Woodbine and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1955. Following her graduation Betty worked in the Accounting Department of Briggs Pump Company in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1956, Betty married Leo Murphy, from Dunlap, and they spent the next two years living and working in Dunlap and Fort Dodge Iowa. During this time, they started their family with the births of two of their children, Cindi and Diana. From Iowa, they transferred with Leo’s job to Omaha where they resided for the next twenty-three years. Ten of those years Betty worked in the account departments of North Side Bank, Nebraska Federal Credit Union and Wiebe Enterprises. They also   completed their family with the birth of their third child, Kim. From 1982 to retirement in 1995, Leo and Betty got to experience more of our nation with job-related transfers to Seattle, Washington, Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado prior to retiring and returning to Omaha.

Betty enjoyed sports of all kinds. It began with riding bikes in the countryside and progressed to playing girls basketball in high school. As an adult, Betty became a fan of Nebraska college football. Later, while living in Salt Lake City, she enjoyed the Utah Jazz. You can imagine her dismay when her children had no athletic prowess whatsoever.

Betty died on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Hillcrest Country Estates in Papillion, Nebraska at the age of 82 years.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; and sister, Bonnie. She is survived by her three daughters, Cindi, Diana and Kim; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister, Eileen; and many other relatives and friends.
