Bob Harvey

July 1, 1939 — November 1, 2020

Logan

Robert Edward Harvey, Jr. was born July 1, 1939, to Helen (Sprinkel) and Robert E. Harvey Sr. in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  He had two siblings, Margaret (Christiansen) and George Robert, who died as an infant.  He lived in Logan all his life, except for his time at college and in the service.  He passed away at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa on November 1, 2020.

Robert graduated from Logan High School in 1957 and graduated with a business degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.  In 1964, he went to Newport Rhode Island to Officers’ Candidate School and graduated as a Navy ensign.  He was assigned to the USS Champlain, where he was privileged to be part of the retrieval team for two of NASA’s Gemini missions and the astronauts on board.  He was then sent to nuclear training school in New Mexico and assigned to Lake Mead Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he finished his military service.  In 1968, he returned to Logan to own and manage the family grocery business with his father, which served Logan for over 100 years.

On February 14, 1970, Bob married Nancy Thomas, whom he had met while in Las Vegas.  They are the parents of (Robert) Brian Harvey and Kristin Harvey Clark.  He was a member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church in Las Vegas.  The store was his hobby and he spent most of his life there.  He was a member of the Logan Chamber of Commerce and a lifetime member of the Chrysolite Masonic Lodge in Logan, where he was a fourth generation Grand Master.  He was also a member of the Shrine.  Bob played a little golf and was a lifelong Husker fan.  He also enjoyed traveling and he and Nancy spent ten winters in Las Vegas near her family. He loved to go there for “blue skies and sunshine,” a favorite expression of his. His biggest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren, who called him Papa.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and John Christiansen and infant brother George Robert, as well as his nephew, Mike Christiansen, and his parents-in-law, Ruth and Alfred Thomas.  He is survived by his wife, Nancy, son and daughter-in-law Brian and Jennifer Harvey of Las Vegas, NV and daughter and son-in-law, Kristin and Mitch Clark of Ithaca, NY.  He is also survived by four grandchildren:  Lindsay Harvey and fiancé Nick Barger of Lincoln, NE and Owen, Annie and Kylie Clark of Ithaca, NY., as well as niece and husband Kay and Bill Biven and family, nephew and wife, J.R. and Sherry Christiansen and Mike’s wife, Kathy Christiansen, brother-in-law and wife, Alan and Colleen Thomas, niece and husband Hayley and Dylan Hanson and Sloan of Las Vegas, NV, and cousins and very dear, lifelong friends. He is also survived by the staff of Longview Nursing Home, who had become family to him.
