Calvin Ivan Hulsebus was born on January 22, 1929, in Buck Grove, Iowa to Paul and Violet Hulsebus. He attended school in Dunlap, Iowa graduating in 1946. Calvin was a mechanic, first owning his own shop and then working at a shop for Jay Ahart. He then went to work for many years at Leaders Equipment in Dunlap before farming full time. Even while he was farming, he was always available to help other friends diagnose their equipment problems, whether in person or over the phone. On December 4, 1954, Calvin married Phoebe Behm in Topeka, Kansas. They made their home in Dow City for the last 66 years.
Calvin was a long-time fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Atlanta Braves. He had a passion for horsepower, first drag racing and then tractor pulling. Calvin had a mechanical mind, and this showed with his success in both drag racing and tractor pulling.
Calvin died on January 22, 2022, his 93rd birthday, at the Reed Place Retirement Community in Denison.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phoebe Hulsebus on November 18, 2020; siblings, Gladys Dudding, Inez Johnson, Milo Hulsebus, Darlene Thompson and Paul Hulsebus as an infant.
