Charles Austin Korn, 91 of Logan, Iowa died on Sunday, December 16, 2007 at the Westmont Care Center in Logan. The family wants to thank the Westmont Care Center employees for their excellent care to Charlie.
Charlie born May 4, 1916 in Wapello, Iowa to parents John A. & Lulu (Kemper) Korn.
He grew up in the Wapello area graduating from the Wapello High School in the mid 1930's. Attended Iowa Wesley College then transferred to Iowa State University. Charlie served in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific Theater. After the war he finished his degree at Iowa State University graduating in 1947. In February of 1947, Charlie married Dorothy Clausen. The couple farmed at Wapello, then moved to Dexter to farm and help Dorothy's mother who was ill. After Dorothy's mother health improved, they moved to Creston, where Charlie started with the Soil Conservation Office. They transferred them to the Logan area in 1956. Four years later, when the Soil Conservation wanted to transfer them again, Charlie resigned and went to work for the Harrison County Sanitation and Health Department. Charlie also worked as the Zoning Administrator for the county. In the mid 1960's, Charlie served as a state representative during Gov. Harold Hughes term. He was the lead sponsor of the amendment to the state constitution that outlawed capital punishment in Iowa. Charlie retired in the mid 1980's.
Charlie was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Logan, where he had been a trustee for many years. He has been involved with the Western Iowa Experimental Farm near Castana, Logan Kiwanis, helped form the Harrison County Development Corp in the 1960's and a member of the National Farmers Union.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy in 1970; a sister Mabel Sanden and a brother John Korn. He is survived by a sister-in-law Ida Mae Korn of Wapello a brother-in-law Dale Clausen of Stuart, Iowa; special friends Don and Kathy Hekter of Logan and many other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be at 11 am Wednesday at the Dexter Cemetery near Dexter, Iowa. Honorary pall bearers Dale Clausen, Owen Doyle, Gary Guge, Brian Korn, Ed Logan, Zane McBride, Bob Michael & Jim Myer. Visitation begins at 1 pm Tuesday with the family receiving friends 6 - 8 pm and a prayer service led by Pastor Gerald Firby at 7:30 pm Tuesday at the Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine.
