Clifton LaVerne Smith was born August 1, 1917, to Ray W. and Emma Jane (Esycheck) Smith in Cylinder, Iowa. He was the youngest of three sons. Cliff entered the military in June of 1940 in the 33rd Armored Regiment. He received his military training at Fort Knox Kentucky. He served as a mechanic and said he was on the move while in the service. He served in England, France, and Germany. Cliff was honorably discharged September of 1944. Cliff met Genevieve Pryor in 1936 and the couple was married March 14, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. Cliff was employed at Kranflack Implement Company, IBP in Denison, and the couple operated the Smith Service Station in Dunlap for many years.
Cliff was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was baptized there on November 9, 1986. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, baking ~ he was a great pie baker ~ and working crossword puzzles.
Cliff died on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 90 years, one month, and 17 days.
Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lloyd and Walter Smith. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Smith of Dunlap, Iowa; three nieces, Charlene Wick and Connie Chamberlain both of Portland, Oregon, Sheila Jensen of Beavercreek, Oregon; one nephew, Richard Hostetter of Wickenburg, Arizona; and many other relatives and friends.
