Dale McHugh

Robert Dale McHugh was born March 17, 1920, and passed to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the age of 88 years, two months, and 21 days. He was the first born child of Peter and Esta (Cox) McHugh at rural Pisgah, Iowa. He received his education at a rural school in this area. Dale married Edith Tietsort and five children were born to this union. Dale was a farmer all of his life, starting on the Nuzum farm with a team of horses. Later, he farmed land owned by Lynn Powley on the Willow bottom and then bought the Pisgah farm, commonly referred to as the Waldemer Farm. In 1964 he had the opportunity to move to a nice farm near Woodbine and farmed there until his retirement. In the late 40s he upgraded his team of horses to his first John Deere tractor and stayed "green" for his entire farming career, including his lawn tractor!

Although his declining health limited his activities, Dale and Edith were able to take several interesting bus trips touring the United States. They were faithful followers of the Old Settlers celebration at Magnolia, Iowa, where they met, and were often awarded the prize for longest married couple in attendance.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Charlotte; two sons, Robert and Warren; son-in-law, Charles Kuhlman; two brothers, Herbert and Daniel; and three sisters, Margaret Dunlop, Agnes Lenz, and Muzetta Braford. Survivors include Edith, his wife of 67 years; daughters, Irene Kuhlman and Shirley (Dennis) Wakehouse; daughter-in-law, Kathy McHugh all of Woodbine, Iowa; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother, Dean (Nina) McHugh of Moorhead, Iowa; sister, Mary Ellen Kruse of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
