Donald Austin Gorham was born on June 14, 1918, to Austin and Etta (Hicks) Gorham in rural Monona County. He was raised on the farm and attended country school. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland to work in a plane factory and was then drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served his country during WWII. He spent time in Germany, Italy, Belgium and North Africa. After his honorable discharge he returned to Dunlap to farm. Donald married Jean Braden on August 23, 1953, at the St. John Lutheran Church Parsonage in Dunlap. The couple farmed west of Dunlap in Monona County.

Donald loved his family, farming, watching the spring calves, and helping Jean in the garden. His pride and joy were his cattle.

Donald died on Sunday, November 21, 2010, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 92 years, five months, and seven days.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Norma Jean Gorham on April 17, 2010; two sisters, Marcelene Fitch and Doris Sutherland. He is survived by his four children, Jenell Gorham of Mondamin, Iowa, Donna and Corwyn Gray of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Dennis Gorham of Denver, Colorado, Don Gorham of Dunlap, Iowa; brother, Roger Gorham of Missouri Valley, Iowa; three sisters, Lila Corey of Dunlap, Iowa, Gwen Pettingrill of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rea and her husband Sebastian Pluveranti of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
