Dorance Cox

Dorance Erwin Cox was born July 26, 1927, to Arthur and Freda (Steffon) Cox near Woodbine, Iowa. He attended country school in Boyer Township and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1944. Dorance married Vida Holliman on June 6, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Riverton, Iowa. To this union three children were born, David, Keith, and Karen. Dorance purchased land in Boyer Township in 1948 and began farming. He farmed 42 years in the Woodbine area, with the exception of two years spent in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. While he was in the service, he spent 18 � months in Tokyo, Japan. The last 32 years of farming were spent on the family farm in Allen Township. The couple retired and moved to their home in Woodbine on April 7, 1990.

Dorance was a member of the Woodbine United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with his grand-children. His hobbies through the years have included reading, his dogs, fox and coyote hunting, attending auctions, and collecting toy tractors, brass unicorns and other items. He enjoyed traveling and volunteered when he could.

Dorance died on Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at his home in Woodbine at the age of 81 years, 11 months, and 11 days.

Dorance was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Cox. He is survived by his wife, Vida Cox of Woodbine, Iowa; three children, David Cox and special friend Kelie of Moorhead, Iowa, Keith Cox of Moorhead, Iowa, Karen and her husband Duane Burmeister of Pisgah, Iowa; three grandsons, Eric, Greg, and Ryan Burmeister; and many other relatives and friends.
