Dorothy Helene (Carpenter) Black was born October 8, 1915, to Clarence & Hettie (Cooksey) Carpenter in Ottumwa, Iowa. After her mother died, she moved to Dow City to live with her Aunt Stella. Dorothy graduated from Dow City High School. Dorothy married Fred Black on November 9, 1936 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. The couple lived in the Dunlap area and later moved to Woodbine. Dorothy worked as a cook at the Woodbine Schools for 15 years. Fred died in December of 1987.
Dorothy was a member of the Christian Church in Woodbine. She enjoyed cooking and baking ~ especially sugar cookies, homemade rolls and pies. She also enjoyed playing cards and giving her grandchildren $2.00 bills for Christmas.
Dorothy died Saturday, May 9, 2009, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 93 years, seven months, and one day.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Fred Black on December 18, 1987; daughters, Shirley Black and Cindy Boham; sons-in-law, Chuck Hexom and Charlie Mohn; grandchildren, Mike Black and Robin Hexom; four great grandchildren; Rebecca Pauley, Tacoma Lyons, Ryan & Isaiah Holsapple; sister, Daphne Jeffrey; and three brothers, Bill, Lloyd & John Carpenter. She is survived by four sons, Fred R. "Dick" Black of Logan, Iowa, Kenneth Black and his wife Sandy of Carter Lake, Iowa, Marvin Black and his wife Glenda of Jacksonville, Florida, Norman Black and his wife Kathy of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter, Marilyn Hexom of Malvern, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; seven great-great grand-children; and many other relatives and friends.
