Dorothy Ann (Schumacher) Hoffmann was born on January 15, 1922, to Thomas and Lena (Leinen) Schumacher on a farm near Defiance, Iowa. She was raised near Defiance and attended St. Paul's Catholic School graduating in 1939. After graduation she worked for an attorney in Harlan. Dorothy married Leonard Hoffmann of Panama, Iowa on November 19, 1940. Dorothy became a hard working homemaker with nine children born to this union. The family lived in the Panama and Earling areas for fifteen years before they moved to a farm west of Dunlap where they resided for 40 years. In August of 1996, the couple moved into Dunlap. Leonard died on November 24, 2003. Dorothy continued to live in Dunlap until she moved to Elmcrest in Harlan. In April of 2014, she moved to the Ridgewood Retirement Community in Bennington, NE.
Dorothy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, and the church choir. Dorothy loved to quilt and made over 100 quilts. She also enjoyed painting, embroidery, writing poetry, singing and playing the harmonica. She was known to make the best homemade bread. Additionally she enjoyed playing cards, Scrabble and Bingo.
Dorothy died on January 19, 2015, at the Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 93 years and four days.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard Hoffmann; grandson Christopher Hoffmann; two great grandchildren, Jared Kelm, Wyatt Warnstaff; great-great granddaughter, Alli Kelm; and granddaughter-in-law, Sally Raymond. She is survived by nine children, Joyce (Tom) Esser of Ute, IA, Jan Raymond of Las Vegas, NV, Len (Kathy) Hoffmann of Grand Junction, CO, Lorrie (Reed) Slevin of Westerville, OH, Doris Heston of Louisville, KY, Ray (Vera) Hoffmann of Greeley, CO, Rita (Allen) Purkapile of Bennington, NE, Cathy (Sam) Simpson of Murfreesboro, TN, and Elaine (Tom) McCord of Bennington, NE; 20 grandchildren; 31 great grand-children; six great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne (Wilford) Weihs of Harlan, IA, Mildred Hoffmann of Panama, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
