Earl Tiby

November 6, 1919 — September 5, 2008

Woodbine, Iowa

Earl Leo Tiby was born November 6, 1919, to James and Mary (Hollins) Tiby in Harrison County, Iowa. His family lived on a farm west of Woodbine where Earl attended country school and Woodbine High School. From his Irish grandparents he inherited a twinkle in his blue eyes and a love of conversation. He married Betty Jane Barkhoff on November 29, 1938, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple farmed west of Woodbine until moving to town in 1988. The love of his life was his wife and their family and his love of the land. He made his home at Rose Vista since February 2008.

Earl was baptized in the Woodbine Christian Church. He and Betty were active in the church and in their neighborhoods wherever they lived. Neighbors were an important part of their lives from trading farm work to their in-town friends.

Earl died on September 5, 2008, at Rose Vista after hospital stays in Missouri Valley and Immanuel in Omaha, at the age of 88 years, 10 months and 30 days.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Betty Tiby; son, Dennis; daughter Mary Lee; and granddaughter, Stephanie Joyce. He is survived by three children, Janet Sauvain of Omaha, Nebraska; Jane and her husband Ed Joyce of Gretna, Nebraska; Mark Tiby and his wife Beth of Urbandale, Iowa; son-in-law Ralph Lee of Springfield, Nebraska; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many other relatives and friends.
