Eva Viola (Vroman) Speake was born on July 4, 1918 in Holly, Colorado to parents Hiram Burdette and Violet May (Burch) Vroman. At the age of seven Eva and her family moved to Iowa. They first lived in Pisgah and then moved to Woodbine. Eva graduated from Woodbine High School in 1936. She took a year of a correspondence course. She taught country school for three years before getting married. On May 21, 1939 she married Gerald L. Speake at the Woodbine Christian Church parsonage. After her marriage she taught and substituted at country school for another four years. The couple always lived in the Woodbine area. Gerald died on August 25, 1986.
Eva was a member of the Woodbine Christian Church. She had been active with the Golden Age Center and did some quilting there. She was a member of the Woodbine Reading Club and the HHH Neighborhood club. Eva was also on the Rose Vista Patient Care Council.
Eva died on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 97 years, seven months and 12 days.
Eva was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald, son, Kenneth Speake, grandson Kenneth Steven Speake, six siblings, Donald Vroman, Melvin Vroman, Alice Yager, LeNore Speake, Roy Vroman and Mae Erlewine. She is survived by her one son, Virgil Dean Speake and his wife Kay Irene (Custer) of Fountain Hills, Arizona; daughter-in-law, Linda Lou (Gossage) Speake of Benton, Arkansas and seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
