Evelyn L. (Shaw) Alvis was born September 14, 1929, to Francis and Hazel (Platt) Shaw near Marcus, Iowa. She worked at Pix Theater and the adjoining Cafe under Bill Bolt from 8th grade though the 12th grade and graduated in 1947. She then went to summer school in Denison. She taught two semesters of country school. On January 8, 1949, she married Jim Alvis. After the couple got married she stayed at home to care for their seven children. When Anna was a senior in high school she started working for Dr. J. Hinze, then Crusader Bus lines for two years, Countryside Timekeeper and then Energique. In 1994 she began working for Fouts Funeral Home and worked there until 2006.

Evelyn was a member of the First Christian Church. She was active in the choir and served as a deaconess at the church. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, card club, dance club and sang with the Noteabelles. Evelyn enjoyed dancing, music, crossword puzzles, and going to the casino.

Evelyn died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at her home in Woodbine at the age of 79 years, six months, and 19 days.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James on December 19, 1994; two grandchildren, Jennifer Alvis Jochims and Bennett Alvis; sisters, Betty Boustead, Gloria Forker, Viola Siebels; and one brother, Jimmy Shaw. She is survived by her seven children, Mike (Judy) Alvis of Woodbine, Iowa, Dennis (Connie) Alvis of Logan, Iowa, David (Carol) Alvis of Keosauqua, Iowa, Mary (Mike)Clausen of Yankton, South Dakota, Tim (Jodie) Alvis of Stromsburg, Nebraska, Donn "Dink" (Kathy) Alvis, of Woodbine, Iowa and Anna (Chad) Rivedal of Omaha, Nebraska; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; two brothers, Francis (Betty) Shaw of Pleasanton, California and Donald (Peni) Shaw of Woodbine, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
