Gene Ulmer

Gene Albert Ulmer was born November 16, 1923, near Woodbine, Iowa to Albert and Harriet (Kiness) Ulmer. Gene attended school in the Dunlap and Dow City areas. He entered the United States Army on March 3, 1943, and was captured and held as a prisoner of war. Gene was honorably discharged on October 11, 1945. Gene farmed in the Denison area and then moved to Council Bluffs and worked as a motorcycle mechanic and at the post office in Bellevue, Nebraska. He moved to Dunlap and worked as a custodian at the Boyer Valley Schools and at Schaben Livestock Auction.

Gene was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Dunlap American Legion Post #224 and helped with the military funerals. Gene enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens Center, Town & Country for coffee and to Ampride in Denison.

Gene died on Sunday, April 8, 2007, at his caretaker's home in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 83 years, four months and 23 days.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Thelma Ulmer on September 12, 2002; daughter Sharon Vest; and nine siblings. Gene is survived by two sons, Randy Ulmer of Charter Oak, Iowa and Garrald Ulmer of Omaha, Nebraska; four daughters, Judy Gerhart of Des Moines, Iowa, Michelle Holmes of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jeana Ulmer of Glidden, Iowa and Amanda Ulmer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; four stepchildren; five sisters, Linda Gerhart of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Doris Goeser of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Shirley Hare of Warrensburg, Missouri, Marjorie Melby of Soldier, Iowa, Betty Kissel of Bedford, Iowa; one brother Max Ulmer of Arion, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
