George Frederick Gorham, 76, died suddenly Wednesday, October 2nd at his home in Altoona, Iowa. He was born April 11, 1926 and grew up a farm boy in Dunlap, Iowa. His parents were George Gorham Sr. and Vera Powley Gorham. He graduated from Kemper Military School in Booneville, Missouri in 1944 and then served as an officer in the US Army.
He married Grace Lorraine Nelson on February 12, 1950. He and his family moved to Ohio and lived there 10 years before moving to New Jersey where he started and managed his own concession supply company. After 25 years, he sold his business, retired, and moved to Altoona, Iowa in 1993. There he lived with his wife at 1007 Waterbury Circle in Altoona. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family, managing his farms, and following politics.
He is preceded in death by his brother Warren. He is survived by his wife, Grace of Altoona; two daughters, Gail Van Wyk of Pleasant Hill, IA and Nancy Rude of Johnston, IA and brother Frank Gorham of San Francisco. He had 11 grandchildren. They are Michelle Van Wyk of Des Moines, Sarah, and Daniel Van Wyk of Pleasant Hill, Esther Huston of Des Moines, David, Stephen, Daniel, Jason, Julia, Jessica, and TJ of Johnston. He had two great granddaughters, Leah and Anna Huston of Des Moines.
A visitation service will be held at Dunn Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave., on Friday October 4 from 6-8:00 p.m. The funeral will held Saturday October 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made out to Iowa Heart Center.
