Gerald Arthur Houston was born to Gerald L. and Muriel M. (Egan) Houston on October 21, 1943, in Carroll, Iowa. Jerry attended St. Joe's Catholic School in Dunlap, Iowa and graduated in 1961. He attended Creighton for two years. Jerry was drafted into the United States Army in 1967 and served for two years, including being stationed in Vietnam where he was shot and awarded the Purple Heart. Jerry returned home and started farming at the Egan farm north of Dunlap where his mother grew up. On July 12, 1990, Jerry married Joni Frisk in Las Vegas at the Little White Chapel and on June 6, 1991, their daughter Jennifer Joan was born.
Jerry was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing cards, especially at the casinos. He raised cattle and hogs and enjoyed time with his friends and at tractor pulls. Jerry was very dedicated to Jennifer and their 4-H calves took them to many shows from the Crawford County Fair, Four County Fair, State Fair and many open shows. The last several years, he enjoyed spending time with his grandkids: Bailee, Charlie and Benjamin Gerald.
Jerry died on May 28, 2024, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of 80 years, seven months and seven days.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Earl and Priscilla Frisk; nephew, Randy Houston; brother-in-law, Charlie Frisk; and sister-in-law, Connie Harper. He is survived by his wife, Joni; daughter, Jennifer and her husband Owen Rickner of Lincoln, Nebraska, step-sons, Greg Brasel and his wife Erinn of Dunlap, Iowa and David Brasel of Livermore, Iowa; three grandchildren, Bailee, Charlie and Benjamin Gerald; brother, Richard Houston and his wife Jean of Denison, Iowa; sister, Janice Arrick of Omaha, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Julie and her husband Paul Pedersen of Sommerville. Alabama; nephews, Jeff Houston and Kenny Piertti; nieces, Pam McCall, Susan Schrick and Denise Arrick Mayhem; and many other relatives and friends.
