Gerald "Jerry" Fredrick Ulmer was born June 14, 1920, to Jacob and Gussie (Sewing) Ulmer on a farm north of Woodbine, Iowa. He grew up on the farm and attended country school through the 8th grade. He married Marie Juliette Hanson on November 21, 1942. The couple farmed in the Woodbine area. Marie died in February of 1971. Jerry farmed the land and drove trucks until 1974, when his farm was sold. He then worked road construction and other jobs until he retirement. Jerry married Irene Tiffey on January 22, 1979, and they lived in and around the Woodbine area.
Jerry loved little children, caring for them, and giving them pet names like Puddin Head. He enjoyed all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed helping local farmers until he was unable to do the work.
Jerry died on Monday, June 20, 2005, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 85 years and six days.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Junior; his first wife, Marie; brother-in-law, Glen Nichols; sister-in-law Mary Miles Ulmer King; nephew, Terry Hull, and niece Barbara Hadden. He is survived by his wife, Irene; two children, Marvin "Bub" Ulmer and his wife Deb of Platte Center, Nebraska, Marcia and her husband Tim Gracey of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brother, Donald Ulmer of Denison, Iowa; three sisters, Thelma Ulmer of Denison, Iowa, Lucille and her husband Frank Hull of Denison, Iowa, Arlene Nichols of Mapleton, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
