Gertrude "Gert" Ann (Mentzer) Adkins was born November 14, 1934, to James and Gertrude (Ort) Mentzer in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She graduated from Missouri Valley High School. In 1952 she married Russell Nichols. The couple farmed in the Moorhead and Soldier area before moving closer to Dunlap, Iowa. In 1969 the couple bought the Safari Night Club. In the summer of 1973 the couple moved to town. On December 22, 1973, Russell died. Gert worked at Moore Brothers in the 1960s and early 1970s. She later worked for Dunlap Fertilizer and B & D Commodities. On April 28, 1990, Gert married Dave Adkins.
Gert was a member of the Dunlap United Methodist Church and the UMW. She liked to crotch, quilt and to cook. She was affectionately known as Mom and Grandma Gert.
Gert died on Saturday, June 18, 2005, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa attaining the age of 70 years, seven months, and four days.
Gert was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; daughter, Patricia Ann in 1958; and sister, Evelyn Hart. She is survived by her husband, Dave Adkins of Dunlap, Iowa; three sons, Alan Nichols of Dunlap, Iowa, Steven Nichols of Norwood, Colorado, Kevin Nichols of Omaha, Nebraska; two daughters, Lori and her husband Bob Brummer of Denison, Iowa, Karen and her husband Scott Anderson of Kiron, Iowa; four grandchildren; five brothers, Chuck Mentzer and his wife Louise of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Bob Mentzer and his wife Ann of Fairborn, Ohio, Jim Mentzer and his wife Jean of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Joe Mentzer and his wife Marilyn of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Bud Mentzer; two sisters, Esther and her husband Virgil Nichols of San Gabriel, California, Dorothy and her husband Harold John of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
