Harry M. Peterson, 80, of Sioux City died Monday, February 23, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 2 at Community of Christ Church in Woodbine, Iowa. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 143 of Woodbine. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Monday, March 1 at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Harry was born March 15, 1923 near Woodbine, Iowa in Harrison County. He was the son of Martin and Alma Josephine (Palmer) Peterson. He attended Olympus Country School in Lincoln Township.
He served in the U.S. Army as Staff Sergeant during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He married Phyllis Marie Hildreth on August 29, 1946 in Papillion, Nebraska. He farmed near Woodbine for 40 years. After retiring from farming, he and Phyllis managed apartment complexes in Des Moines and Little Rock, Arkansas for five years. They lived in Onawa, Iowa for 11 years before moving to Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City in 2001.
He was an active member and ordained teacher of the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church in Woodbine. He was proud to be a member of the Color Guard of the American Legion, enjoyed watching sports , traveling and family gatherings.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Diane and Jim Soetmelk of Greybull, Wyoming and Judy and Terry Hamer of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Andrea and her husband, Mike Laird of Greybull, David and his wife Jill Soetmelk of Greybull, Emily Hamer of Denver, Colorado and Andrew and his wife Theresa Hamer of Boulder, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Brendon and Brianna Laird and Desiree Young; two sisters, Alice Madsen of Onawa and Margaret Chipman of Fort Madison; a sister-in-law, Glendina Peterson, Onawa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Darlene Turner and Maxine Peterson; and three brothers Fred, Earl, and Robert.
