Helen Alvis

Helen E. (Maguire) Alvis was born November 6, 1915, to Charles and Sarah (Fountain) Maguire in Emerson, Iowa. At the age of 11 she moved with her family to the Hardscratch area and attended the Logan High School. Helen took care of the Gunnette family in the Harris Grove area for a few years. On July 20, 1935, Helen married Kenneth "Shorty" Alvis at the Methodist Parsonage in Logan. The couple lived and worked with Kenneth's folks by Orson, Iowa. After Marilynn was born they moved to a farm house of their own. The couple later farmed near Logan and then moved to Omaha for a short time before returning to the Orson area. In 1952, the couple moved to Woodbine. Helen was a waitress at the Hamburger Hut in Woodbine and also worked for Max Mann as a bookkeeper.
Helen enjoyed growing African violets, mowing the lawn, and sewing ~ especially the children's clothes when they were in school. Helen was known for her baked bread, potato salad, cinnamon rolls, fried chicken and Christmas candies. She preferred to eat desserts and salads more than anything else.
Helen died on Saturday, November 17, 2007, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 92 years and 11 days.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; two sons, Merv Alvis and Merlyn "Shorty" Alvis; two sisters, Ina Lineberry and Betty Nelson; and two brothers, Dean Maguire and Donald Maguire. She is survived by her two daughters, Marilynn and her husband Virgil Mefferd of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Myrna and her husband LaVerne Hunt of Omaha, Nebraska; 13 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
