Helen Ehlert

Helen Marguerite (James) Ehlert was born April 20, 1922, to Andrew Milo and Uta (Hopkins) James in Logan, Iowa. After Uta's death Andrew married Sarah Eunice (Mills) James. Sarah then adopted Helen. Helen was raised in Woodbine, Iowa and graduated from Woodbine High School. She then attended Woodbine Normal School and received her teaching certificate. Helen married Leslie Beebee Ehlert on April 4, 1942, in Papillion, Nebraska. The couple farmed in the Woodbine area, and Helen also taught school.

Helen enjoyed traveling especially to see her family. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren. She visited all 50 states and their capitals as well as 20 countries. She enjoyed writing poetry and some of her poems have been published..

Helen died on Friday, February 25, 2011, at her daughter's home in Golden, Colorado at the age of 88 years, ten months and five days.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leslie Ehlert on March 5, 1977; two sons, James and Fred Ehlert; and two brothers, Howard and Andrew James. She is survived by her daughter Ellen and her husband Roy Vallie of Golden, Colorado; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Betty Rodgers of Beaver Creek, Ohio; and many other relatives and friends.
