Henry Joseph Coenen was born May 22, 1927, to Henry Joseph and Agnes (Stoll) Coenen in Westphalia, Iowa. He was raised in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface Parish School. Henry farmed, worked at a packing house in Omaha, at John Deere and REC. Henry married Dorothy Gross on April 19, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. The couple lived in Omaha, Nebraska for one year, moved to Botna, Iowa, and then to a farm near Woodbine, Iowa. The couple moved into town in 1979.
Henry was a member of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and other wood projects. He loved baseball ~ especially the Cubs. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and playing cards, but he especially loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Henry died on Friday, April 3, 2009, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 12 days.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Ray Coenen. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Coenen of Woodbine, Iowa; five children, Joseph Coenen and Rich Johnson of Van Couver, Washington, Father Tom Coenen of Earling, Iowa, Gary Coenen and Julie Michel of Woodbine, Iowa, Mary and Todd Heistand of Woodbine, Iowa, Jackie and Scott Clark of Pisgah, Iowa; 11 grand-children; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Rauterkus of Omaha, Nebraska, Bernice Stracke of Harlan, Iowa; one brother Kenneth and Verna Coenen of Harlan, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
