Herman Clifford Smith of Dunlap was born May 4, 1914, to Silas and Ruth (Hazen) Smith on a farm near Dunlap, IA. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then went to work, doing odd jobs, to help support the family. He was working in Lakefield, MN helping area farmers with the harvest when he met Virginia Salisbury at a roller skating rink. The couple was united in marriage on November 14, 1940, in Osceola, MO. They both worked at a dairy farm in Benson, NE. Herman entered the United States Army on August 25, 1942. He served stateside and eventually was sent to Germany and France. He was honorably discharged on April 11, 1946. The couple then made their home in Dunlap. Herman worked for Gerald and Muriel Houston as a farm hand. Due to a farming accident, the couple moved into Dunlap. Herman then did various odd jobs for various farmers. After his recovery, Herman worked for Quad States Construction Company. He retired when he was 65 years old.
Herman was a member of The American Legion Post 224 for 19 years. His biggest hobby was being generous. He enjoyed buying lottery tickets each week, with the hopes of winning it big. Herman also enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, playing cards and checkers. He took pleasure in vegetable and flower gardening. He also had a passion for baseball and the Chicago Cubs.
Herman died on Monday, September 12, 2005, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, IA attaining the age of 91 years, four months, and eight days.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Virgil, Perry, and Sherman; infant boy, Alfred; infant twins, Delbert and Della; sisters, Margaret Wolf, Leona Berger; and great granddaughter, Serenity Garrison. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Dunlap; daughter Linda and her husband Raymond "Pete" Dilley of Pisgah; granddaughter Kim and her husband Troy Garrison of Pisgah, grandson Randy Dilley of Branson, MO; sisters, Leta Foscalina of Richmond, CA, Lena Jacobs of Dunlap; brother, Martin Smith and his wife Bonnie of Woodbine; two great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
