Irma Jean Kerger was born on August 31, 1952, in Moline, Illinois to Roy Lee and Bertha Lea (Jeffries) Tharp. She grew up in Rock Island, Illinois and Charleston, South Carolina. On September 14, 1968, Irma was united in marriage to LaVerne Kerger in South Carolina. She remained there while he served in the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge, the couple moved to Woodbine, Iowa to be near family. Irma and LaVerne were blessed with four children, Renee, Tony, Tom and Tammy. She worked at Perfection Form, Rex’s Meat Market, Foodland and Rose Vista Nursing Home where she worked until her retirement.
Irma loved to cook and bake, pouring her heart into every meal she created. A devoted fan of Keith Urban, she found joy in attending his concerts, where she would lose herself in the music. Irma had an undeniable affection for dogs and she found immense joy in the companionship of her furry friends. Above all else, family was at the heart of Irma’s life. She cherished each moment spent with her loved ones.
Irma died on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at the age of 72 years, six months and six days.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Robert Keith Tharp. She is survived by her children, Renee (Rollyn) Hackett of Logan, Iowa, Tony Kerger (Kara Vallier) of Woodbine, Tom Kerger (LeeAnn Clark) of Woodbine and Tammy Kerger of Logan; grandchildren, Tara, Jaden, Carson, Kody and Trevor; sister, Virginia “Ginger” Tharp of Woodbine; and many other relatives and friends.
