Jacob William Behrendt was born on August 24, 1928, to Joseph and Mary Margaret (Windeshausen) Behrendt in Panama, Iowa. He was raised in the Dunlap area and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Dunlap. Jake proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Jake met Theresa Bissen at a dance in April of 1950 and on October 11, 1950, the couple was married in Earling, Iowa. After his honorable discharge, they started farming near Panama and then moved to a farm near Buck Grove. Jake also worked for IBP for 23 years. In 1993, they retired and moved to Dunlap.
Jake was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and he was also a member of the American Legion Post #224. Jake loved to play cards and drive around checking on the crops. He also kept an eye on his garden and farm. Jake was an avid sports fan.
Jake died on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa at the age of 89 years, five months, and 10 days.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Theresa Behrendt; daughter-in-law, Connie (DeWald) Behrendt; grandson, Kurt Russmann; and two sisters, Teresa Schomers and Susan Brungardt. He is survived by his nine children, Clara Ann (Peter) Cartwright of Shell Knob, Missouri, Joe (Diane) Behrendt of Sioux City, Iowa, Vicki (Dan) Mabie of Huntington Beach, California, Kenny (Kathy) Behrendt of Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Keith Behrendt of Sioux City, Iowa, Paul Behrendt of Austin, Texas, Nancy (Joel) Fox of Helotes, Texas, Cindy (Tom) Trierweiler of Hinton, Iowa, Sam Behrendt of Clearwater, Nebraska; 21 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Donald "Griz" (Virginia) Behrendt of Dunlap, Iowa; two in-laws, Sister Mary Helen Bissen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Walter (Katherine) Bissen of Harlan, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
