Janet (Walsh) Briney was born January 11, 1919, to Dr. John G. and Dorret (Dillon) Walsh in Panama, Iowa. Later that year the family moved to Woodbine where Dr. Walsh continued to practice medicine. Janet attended the Woodbine School and graduated in 1936. She attended college and then taught country school for a year. She then returned to college and graduated from Van Sant Business School in Omaha. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Fontenelle Hotel in Omaha. She then moved to Kansas City and worked at the Municipal Gas Company and the Family and Children's Bureau. Janet married Carl Chaffin in 1945. The couple was blessed with one son. In 1946 she returned to Woodbine to help care for her mother and later her father. On January 20, 1961, she married Gene Briney at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Harlan, Iowa. The couple lived in Woodbine, Park Rapids, Minnesota, Kimberling City, Missouri, and then returned to Woodbine to enjoy their retirement. Gene died in 1992.

Janet was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of P.E.O. Janet enjoyed quilting, cross stitching, reading and watching sports on TV. She was also very supportive of the library.

Janet died Monday, May 21, 2007, at Community Memorial Hospital in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 88 years, four months, and 10 days.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; and her brother, Colonel John Walsh. She is survived by her son, John Chaffin and his wife Lylia of Mapleton, Iowa; three grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Walsh of New York City, New York; and many other relatives and friends.
