James Lloyd McCurley was born on April 29, 1947, in Logan, Iowa to James and Miriam (Kersten) McCurley. He attended Fairview Country School and then went to school in Missouri Valley, Iowa where he graduated in the class of 1965. Jim went on to further his education at Iowa State University and then Wayne State College where he earned his degree in Secondary Education – Math. He taught at the Springfield/Platteview High School, Cathedral High School and Bedford High School. He worked a variety of construction jobs, and being a proud American, put a flag up at each of the job sites. Jim enjoyed coaching wrestling and cross-country. After coaching he continued to referee for many years. He also worked at Menards and volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Jim was an avid supporter of the Logan Magnolia athletics. You would see him in the stands at nearly every event. He was a bowler, spending countless hours at the alley perfecting his game while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow bowlers. His competitive spirit extended beyond the lanes, as he also relished playing cards with friends at HyVee, where laughter and friendly competition made for memorable gatherings. Jim enjoyed bike riding and running and frequently participated in road races and marathons. He also had a love for baking. Known for his delicious pies and cookies, Jim took great pleasure in sharing his baked goods with family and friends.
Jim died on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the CHI Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley at the age of 77 years, four months and 19 days.
