Joe Harold O"Banion was born on January 18, 1931 to Harold and Loretta (Holben) O'Banion near Woodbine, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1949. On May 28, 1950, Joe married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Nelk. To this union four children were born. After 34 years of marriage, Carolyn was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer and died on January 3, 1985. Joe married Charlene "Tommie" Maaske in January of 1991. Joe was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Magnolia, Iowa.
Joe farmed until his retirement in 1997. Carpentry was his other passion and you can see his fine work throughout the homes and businesses in Harrison County and beyond. As much as Joe loved his farm and his carpentry work, his family brought him the most joy. Many will remember Joe for his fine craftsmanship, but his children will remember him for his beautiful smile, hearty laugh, his kind heart, his gentle spirit, and his unconditional love. He will be greatly missed by all those that loved him.
