John Patrick Loy was born July 1, 1925, the only son of John and Elsie (Sullivan) Loy. He was born on a farm south of Dunlap, Iowa and received his education at St. Joseph's School, graduating in 1943. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Patrick's Church in Dunlap. Following graduation John Pat farmed in the Dunlap area and fed many cattle. John Pat married Kathryn Clara Smith on February 28, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Their union was blessed with three children. The couple made their home for forty years on a farm south of Dunlap. They moved into the town of Dunlap in 1988.

John Pat was on the board of directors of the Dunlap Housing and Development Corporation, he worked the sale ring at the hog farm for Dunlap Livestock and he served one term on the Dunlap City Council. He worked for over 20 years with Fouts Funeral Home and he was a trustee for the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. In his spare time he worked at the cemetery. He was very proud of the improvements that were made while he was on the board. John Pat loved socializing with family and friends at the local minimarts.

John died on February 9, 2009, at his home in Dunlap attaining the age 83 years, seven months, and eight days.

John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helen Johnson; and two brothers-in-law, Wesley Johnson and Charles Vau Dell. He is survived by his wife Kathryn Loy of 60 years of Dunlap, Iowa; daughter, Patricia and her husband Jerry Gibbs of Naples, Florida; two sons, David Loy and his friend Jeanie Goslar of Charter Oak, Iowa, Michael Loy and his wife Lois of Logan, Iowa; granddaughter, Brittany Loy of Logan, Iowa; three sisters, Virginia Vau Dell of Paradise Mountain, California, Rosalie and her husband Dr. Donald Stormberg of Omaha, Nebraska; Shirley Loy of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
