John Walpus

John Hans Walpus was born November 13, 1936, to Hans and Rachel (Derycke) Walpus in Omaha, Nebraska. John attended school at St. Mary's and South High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp for three years during the Korean War. John was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He worked for Wilson Concrete for six months and then at Nixon Feed Mill for 19 years as a warehouse foreman. On June 10, 1955, John married Waneta Kriz in Omaha. The couple lived in Omaha. Waneta died in 1974. John worked at Proctor and Gamble for 15 years and he was also the day custodian in the Papillion school district. John married Kathryn Heistand on January 3, 1987. The couple moved to Woodbine in 2000.

John was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and being a park host. He also enjoyed hunting for mushrooms.

John died on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at his home at the age of 71 years, four months, and two days.

John was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Waneta; brother Jim Walpus and granddaughter, Jessica Walpus. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Walpus of Woodbine, Iowa; four children; Cindy (Dennis) Fields of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Pam (Kol) Toth of Priest River, Idaho, Denise Walpus and Timothy (Kris) Walpus all of Omaha, Nebraska; 23 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sister, Betty (Terry) Brady of Eddyville, Iowa; and Kathryn's children, Debbie (Gale) Johnsen of Dunlap, Iowa, Cindy (Tom) Koster of Omaha, Nebraska, Todd (Mary) Heistand & Tammy (Jim) Barrett all of Woodbine, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
