Judith "Judy" Louise (Howard) Smith was born December 17, 1939, on a very snowy day in Monona County (Jordan Township) to Cora Edith Ulven and Earl Howard. She attended Spring Valley rural school and then Moorhead Public School. Her family moved to Dunlap in April of 1951 and she graduated from DHS in 1958. After graduation she worked in Omaha as a proof reader until she married John P. Smith, son of Francis Cecil and Eva Merritt Smith at St. Patrick's Church in Dunlap on July 28, 1962. To this union, three children were born. Judy worked as a high school principal's secretary, assistant at the flower shop, church secretary, cook at the Dairy Sweet and the Gold Slipper, and was a dining room cashier at the Dunlap Sale Barn. She was active as a church accompanist, choir member, and was a member of the Altar Society.
Judy enjoyed genealogy, reading, embroidery, piano playing, cooking and baking, collecting cookbooks and old music, garage saling and secondhand shops. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Judy died Friday, October 18, 2013, in Moorhead following a courageous 20 year battle with cancer at the age of 73 years, 10 months and one day.
