Katie Alice (Garvin) Maddon was born November 18, 1915, at Chism, Oklahoma to Lemuel Calloway and Mahalia Jane (Haney) Garvin. She moved with her family to the Washington/Purcell area as a child and she attended Washington School. Katie married Martin Teddy Maddon January 28, 1939, at Washington, Oklahoma. The couple farmed there until 1955. They moved their family to Albuquerque, New Mexico where Martin opened a service station. Katie worked as a cook in the Washington and Albuquerque School systems until retirement.
Katie was a talented self taught artist and actively pursued her love of painting with oils and pastels. She won many first place ribbons, Best of Show and People's Choice awards in the Albuquerque Area. She continued her love of painting until her death. Katie was a member of Los Volcanos Amateur Art Group. Katie and Martin were active members of the Poco Quartros Model A Club and enjoyed all the club's activities for many years.
Katie died April 22, 2010 at Longview Nursing Home, in Missouri Valley at the age of 94 years, five months, and four days.
Katie is preceded in death by her parents; husband Martin in 2000; step-sister, Rosa Maude (Eden) Maxwell; sisters Nora Lillian Rhinehart, Mary Aldora Bagley, Callie Mae Young; and brother Lemuel Otis Garvin. Katie is survived by her two daughters Ruth Kay Pickle and husband Jerald of Logan, Iowa, Teddie Carole Bruce and husband Robert of Corrales, New Mexico; grandchildren, Michael and Lori Pickle, David and Gail Pickle all of Logan, Iowa; Kimber Bruce of Corrales, New Mexico and Amber and Paul Winski of Chino Valley, Arizona; eight great grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
