Laura Mae Leonard was born November 8, 1903, to Fred and Minnie (Dale) Leonard in Logan, Iowa. Laura was raised in the Logan and Woodbine areas; graduating from Woodbine High School in 1923. She then went on to teach in the Harris Grove two-room school. Laura attended Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) for two years and became the Deputy County Superintendent of the Harrison County Rural Schools. She held this position for over 15 years. In 1943, Laura worked for the District Court in Harrison County. In 1944 she was elected as the Clerk of the District Court. She was elected for two more four year terms as well. She retired temporarily when her mother became ill. After Laura's father died in 1960 she and her mother moved to Logan, and Laura worked for Stern Abstract Company and also the Harrison County Treasurer's Office. Laura retired in 1970 and her mother died in 1973.
Laura was a member of the Logan Christian Church, American Cancer Society, Republican Party, P.E.O., Eastern Star and D.A.R. She loved children and doing all she could do to support education. In her lifetime, Laura has seen radios and televisions come into every home, the Great Depression, prohibition, travel by horse and buggy to man on the moon, two World Wars, the rise and fall of the Cold War and equal rights to name just a few things.
Laura died on Monday, November 2, 2009, at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 105 years, 11 months, and 25 days.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents; eight siblings, Harry, Roy, and Walter James Leonard, twins Ray Leonard and Ruby Burbridge, and Glenn and Dale Leonard, and Helen McElroy. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
