Leslie Soma

Leslie Roger Soma was born October 30, 1950 to Irvin and Betty (Bell) Soma in Belmond, Iowa. He was raised in Belmond and Jewell and graduated high school from South Hamilton High School in 1969. Leslie then attended Iowa Central Community College in Webster City and played baseball for the school. He received his Associate’s degree and then transferred to Northwest Missouri State and received his Bachelor’s degree in Business in 1975. Leslie married Keva Kibby on July 29, 1972, at the Congregational Church in Dunlap. The couple moved to Carroll, Iowa and managed the Carroll Bowling alley. They then moved to Dunlap in 1978. Leslie worked at the Dubuque Packing Plant for 13 years. In 1991 he started to work as a maintenance man for the Boyer Valley Public Schools.

Leslie was baptized in 1951 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, Iowa. He was confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Iowa in 1966. He attended the Congregational Church in Dunlap. He loved to camp, fish, and hunt. He was also a sports fanatic. Most importantly, Leslie loved to spend time with his family and he enjoyed his grandchildren tremendously.

Leslie died on May 8, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 60 years, six months, and eight days.

Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kay Johansen; and father-in-law, Cless Kibby. He is survived by his wife, Keva Soma of Dunlap, IA; two sons Chad (Susan) Soma of Dunlap, IA, Todd (Erin) Soma of Earling, IA; five grandchildren, Hunter, Jesse, Hayden, Zoey, and Cale; 16 brothers and sisters, Connie (Wally) Klooster of Webster City, IA, Jerry (Seta) Soma of Gilroy, CA, Karen (Mike) Riordan of Allen Park, MI, Joanne (Jim) Grimes of Marshalltown, IA, Donald Soma of Ankeny, IA Kenny (Lee) Soma of Mason City, IA, Bonnie (Paul) Gogerty of Osage, IA, Duane (Carol) Soma and Patty (Dave) Widick all of Jewel, IA, Jeff Soma and Steve Soma both of Fresno, CA, Carol (Matt) Carlson of Stratford, IA, Terri Soma of Jewell, IA, Rodney (Julie) Soma of Spencer, IA, Susie Soma of Jewell, Iowa; brother-in-law, Darwin Johansen of Des Moines, IA; mother-in-law, Zoe Kibby of Dunlap, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
