Lila Euphemia Pitt was born on September 4, 1925, to parents Amos and Evelyn (Dungan) Hillyer in the Harris Grove area, south of Logan, Iowa. The family moved to Omaha, then Hancock and eventually the Portsmouth area. Lila graduated from Logan High School in 1942. She received her teaching certificate and began teaching at a country school near Pisgah at the age of 16. She taught school for 2 years. On January 22, 1944, Lila married Bill Pitt at the Methodist Parsonage in Logan. The couple then began farming. Lila helped Bill with the farming and gardening and raised eight children. Lila worked in Fort Calhoun at an aluminum fabrication plant prior to working at Perfection Form for 17 years. The couple retired and moved to town in 1994 after 47 years on the farm.

Lila was a member of the Community of Christ, she was involved with a neighborhood club, and volunteered her time to countless church and community activities. It was not uncommon to have Lila knocking at your door with cookies, Jello or some type of homemade snack. While visiting her home it was certain you couldn’t leave without having something to eat. She was always putting others first. She especially enjoyed the time spent with friends and family.

Lila died on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Azria Health Rose Vista in Woodbine at the age of 98 years, ten months and 11 days.
