Lowell "Shorty" Earl Farley was born on April 11, 1918, near Dunlap, Iowa to Carlisle Thomas and Bertha Jane (Driggins) Farley. He was raised in Dunlap and attended country school. Shorty married Catherine Mary Quirk, and the couple farmed in the Manteno area east of Dunlap. Shorty worked for Sweetman John Deere. The couple then moved to Ankeny, Iowa and Shorty worked for Triplett John Deere for one year before returning to Dunlap. Shorty worked for Charlie Egan at the Purina Mill in Dunlap for 30+ years. Catherine died May 13, 1960. Shorty married Gertrude Stephany Van Thuyne in 1963.
Shorty was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap where he was a custodian for 20+ years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Shorty died Friday, September 21, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa attaining the age of 89 years, five months and 10 days.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Catherine in 1960 and Gertrude in 1998; three brothers, Glen, Lyle, and Ira Farley; and three sisters, Gladys Brown, Grace Hansen, and Lee Egan. He is survived by his sons, Robert Lowell Farley and his wife Kathy of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Thomas Edward Farley and his wife Sandi of Schaumburg, Illinois, Michael James Farley and his wife Karen of Broomfield, Colorado, Craig Van Thuyne and his wife Bobbie of Las Vegas, Nevada; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
