Luella Lorena (Smith) Mathison-Coop was born on February 18, 1932, near Dunlap, Iowa to George and Violet (Tripp) Smith. She was raised near Dunlap and attended country school and then went to Dunlap High School. Luella married Forrest Mathison on January 1, 1950 in Dunlap. The couple lived in Defiance, Iowa where Forrest worked as a farmhand. They then moved west of Dunlap and Forrest continued to work for area farmers. They returned to Defiance and farmed with Forrest's parents before a short stint in Omaha and finally moving to Woodbine. After Forrest died Luella married Jack Coop on May 20, 1999.
Luella loved to garden and can her produce. She also enjoyed cooking and sewing.
Luella died on Friday, October 16, 2020 at Longview Nursing Home in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 88 years, seven months and 28 days.
Luella was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands Forrest, on December 14, 1978, and Jack Coop; and two brothers, Arthur and Lloyd Smith. She is survived by six children, Marcella (Otto) Totten of Woodbine, Martha (Steve) Smith of Missouri Valley, Anthony (Donna) Mathison of Hamilton, Missouri, Marlene Mathison of St. Joseph, Missouri, Kim (Sue) Mathison of Des Moines, Chris (Marilyn) Mathison of Woodbine; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; and many other relatives and friends.
