Marguerite Barnes was born June 27, 1906, to James and Ferriba (VanArsdol) Michael in Woodbine, Iowa. Marguerite attended Bostwick Country School and Woodbine High School. Marguertie married Edward Earl Barnes on January 20, 1926. The couple lived in Missouri Valley and the Hardscratch area. The couple moved to Omaha in 1955 and Marguerite worked at the Brandies Food Service. She then worked for Queen Clean and retired from the dry cleaning business at the age of 69. Marguerite loved children and was a foster grandmother for 21 years at the neonatal unit at the University Hospital.

Marguerite was a member longtime of the Salvation Army Church and she was the oldest soldier in the church. She taught Bible school and held various offices in the Rebekah Lodge. Marguerite lived in the Underwood Towers for 26 years and the Durham Booth Manor for 10 years. While living in the Underwood Towers, she was the president of the tenant association. She enjoyed traveling and visited 49 of the 50 states, Europe, all the provinces of Canada. Marguerite saw Haley's Comet twice. The first time she voted, it was for Theodore Roosevelt.

Marguerite died July 16, 2007, at the Lutheran Home in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of 101 years and 19 days.

Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; one son, Bill Barnes; two daughters, Betty Butcher and Donna Drogemeier; three brothers, John VanArsdol, Glen and Kenneth Michael; and sister, Loraine Henderson. She is survived by eight children, Gladys Gardner of Moorhead, Iowa, Joan Williams of Logan, Iowa, Marian Seidel of Houston, Texas, Shirley Cullifer of Norfolk, Virginia, Bonnie Worley of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Beverly Zoll of Omaha, Nebraska, Carole Barnes of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Norman Barnes and his wife Chris of Omaha, Nebraska; 24 grandchildren; numerous great grand-children and great great grandchildren; one sister, Wilma Runkle of Independence, Missouri; and many other relatives and friends.
