Marie Shafer

Marie Elizabeth (Kummer) Shafer was born January 15, 1917, near Dow City, Iowa to parents Ernst and Clara (Aeberhardt) Kummer. She attended country school in the Dow City and Dunlap area. On March 27, 1935 she married Donald "Shorty" Shafer in Harlan, Iowa. The couple farmed near Logan then west of Woodbine and in 1947 they purchased their farm north of Woodbine. Marie worked at the Woodbine Produce for a number of years. Shorty died on February 14, 1991.

Marie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Woodbine. She was active in a Women's Circle at church. She loved to garden and visit.

Marie died on Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 89 years, two months, and seven days.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Shorty; son, Richard; granddaughter, Candi Shafer; great granddaughter Jessica Custer; three brothers, Frank, Richard and John Kummer; and two sisters, Margaret Kummer and Ruth Conrad. She is survived by four children, John Shafer and his wife Donna of Missouri Valley, Iowa, Jolene Lytle of Harlan, Iowa, Larry Shafer and Bonnie of Woodbine, Iowa and George Shafer of Bennington, Nebraska; daughter-in-law, Carol Shafer of Gregory, South Dakota; 16 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Schubert and Kathryn Reed both of New York and many other relatives and friends.
