Marilyn Kay (Schomers) Grote was born May 29, 1955, to Cyril and Verena (Henscheid) Schomers in Harlan, Iowa. She was raised in Westphalia and attended school in Westphalia and graduated from Harlan High School in 1973. Marilyn then attended Hair by Stewarts in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Marilyn started working for The Hair Station and purchased the shop in the late 1970s. Marilyn married Denny Grote on June 14, 1980, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. The couple lived, farmed and raised their three children west of Dunlap.
Marilyn was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was an Altar Society member and was the church organist. Marilyn started playing the organ at St. Boniface at the age of 16 and continued to play at St. Patrick's. She played for many weddings and funerals. Marilyn enjoyed playing the piano, games and putting puzzles together. She loved cooking and baking. Marilyn was always willing to help anyone in need. She loved spending time with her family, friends and especially her grandson.
Marilyn died on Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 62 years, five months, and 28 days.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law, Richard and Phyllis (Kimmen) Grote, and her brother-in-law, John VonTersch. She is survived by her husband, Denny Grote of Dunlap, Iowa; three children, Thomas Grote of Waterloo, Iowa, Theresa and her husband Greg Amunson of Ute, Iowa, Timothy Grote and his special friend Jennifer Klindt of Dunlap, Iowa; grandson, Gavin Amunson; brother, Michael Schomers of Westphalia, Iowa; sister, Mary and her husband Jim Tomky of Amherst, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Diane VonTersch and Karla and Tom Assmann and many other relatives and friends.
