Marjory Helen (Plath) Black was born September 25, 1917, the oldest child to Harry and Alice (Grosvenor) Plath on their farm near Magnolia, Iowa. She died on May 11, 2011, at her home in Leavenworth, Kansas at the age of 93 years, seven months, and 16 days. Marjory had been a resident of Homestead Assisted Living since June 2010.
Marjory graduated from Magnolia High School and attended Boyles Business School in Council Bluffs and then furthered her schooling in Michigan. Marjory married Elvin W. Black on April 12, 1943. The couple lived in Manhattan, Kansas for 40 years. She retired from the Riley County Assessor’s Office in Manhattan, Kansas in 1987. Following retirement she held numerous clerical jobs.
Marjory grew up in the Zion Lutheran Church in Magnolia. She was a longtime member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Manhattan, Kansas. She enjoyed gardening and having lots of flowers. She also enjoyed bowling.
Marjory was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Black on April 26, 1989; son, Dennis Black on February 20, 2007; sister Phyllis Johnson; and two brothers, Virgil and Hubert Plath. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth (Phil) Fetters of Platte City, MO; daughter-in-law, Elaine Black of Big Springs, TX; granddaughter, Sheri (Dan) Saville of Meriden, KS; two grandsons, Randy Black of Dallas TX, David (Gayle) Black of El Reno, OK; five step grand-children, Kris Roemer of Big Springs, TX, Tammy (Jim) Vibecoat of Platte City, MO, Terry (Karen) Fetters of Bensalem, PA, Andrea Lang of Cameron, Mo and David Henderson of Fairfield, CA; great granddaughter, Shannon Saville of Asheville, NC; three great grandsons, Joshua Saville of USAF Vance AFB, OK, Taylor Black and Trace Black both of El Reno, OK; twelve step great grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Creger of Council Bluffs, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
