Mary Ann Kenkel was born on March 13, 1925, to Bernard Sr. and Caroline (Mumm) Kenkel in Dunlap, Iowa. She was raised in Dunlap where she attended St. Joseph Catholic School and then the family moved to Woodbine when she was a sophomore and she graduated from Woodbine High School in 1943. Mary Ann took the Normal Training and taught school. She eventually earned her degree from the University of Omaha. She taught school at Starry Point Country School, Modale, near Sioux City, Lewis Central where she taught second grade for 23 years and then she taught second grade in Woodbine for 20 years. Mary Ann volunteered her time at the school after her retirement and also helped to tutor children.
Mary Ann was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary Ann enjoyed traveling and also reading.
Mary Ann died on Thursday, October 9, 2014, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 89 years, six months, and 26 days.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; siblings & in-laws, Gerald (Fern) Kenkel, Pauline (James) Kaster, Edward Kenkel, Monica Kenkel, Arlene Kenkel; and nephews, Terry Kenkel and John Kenkel. She is survived by her four siblings, Leo Kenkel, Don "Red" Kenkel both of Woodbine, IA, Bernie Kenkel of Marshalltown, IA, Marjorie (Mike) Calder of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law, Lee Ann Kenkel of Pawleys Island, SC; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
