Mary Etta (Higgins) Kroll was born February 2, 1932, to Paul and Della (Carbaugh) Higgins near Dunlap, Iowa. She was raised near Dunlap and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in 1950. Mary married Clarence Kroll on June 18, 1951, in Dow City, Iowa. The couple farmed. Clarence died in October of 1983. Following his death Mary moved to Shelby, Iowa. Mary loved working with people. She worked at Kopper Kettle in Minden, was a caregiver for Judy Pauley, worked at Variety Distributors in Harlan, REM-Leadway in Shelby and the Avoca Day Care.
Mary was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Avoca. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, sewing, and also embroidery.
Mary died on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at Myrtue Hospital in Harlan, Iowa at the age of 84 years, eight months, and 10 days.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence Kroll; son-in-law, Max Sievers; sister, Alma Freeman; and two brothers, Glen and Ed Higgins. She is survived by five children, Jim (Pat) Kroll of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Ron (Sheila) Kroll of Shelby, Iowa, Tom (Tammi) Kroll of Seattle, Washington, Mary Kay Sievers of Avoca, Iowa, Peggy (Patrick) Ausdemore of Neola, Iowa; 13 grand-children; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Bernard (Helen) Higgins of Belle Plaine, Iowa; one sister, Agnes TenEyck of Rockport, Texas; and many other relatives and friends.
