Maxine Newell

Bernice Maxine (Baker) Newell was born July 24, 1930, near Woodbine, Iowa to Elton & Alma (Brewster) Baker. She attended Merry Brook Country School and graduated from Woodbine High School in 1949. Maxine moved to Davenport and worked for Bell Telephone Company and also a telephone answering exchange company. She then worked for the Davenport schools as a teacher's aide for the special needs children. She retired from this position in 1993 and returned to Woodbine to be closer to her sister and brother.

Maxine was a member of Followers of Christ, American Legion Auxiliary, Rebekah's Lodge, and the Pilot's Club (riverboat captains on the Mississippi). She also volunteered her time at Davenport's Scott County Handicap Developmental Center.

Maxine died on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 77 years, nine months, and 19 days.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Janet Newell; and two brothers, Charles and Dwight "Pickles" Baker. She is survived by one son, Dwight Newell and his wife Carolyn of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Daniella, Dwight Jr., and Dee Dee Newell; one sister, Mary Rozella Baker and one sister-in-law, Nancy Baker both of Woodbine, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
