Melvin Merlin Wendt was born February 27, 1926, in Crawford County, Iowa to Martin and Eva Marie (Ladehoff) Wendt. He attended country school in the Charter Oak area. On May 31, 1946, he married Annamarie Evelyn Malone. The couple farmed near Charter Oak for a while then in Deloit and Dow City before settling in Woodbine in 1965. Melvin worked at Western Iowa Pork in Harlan, Blue Star Foods in Council Bluffs, Wilkensen's in Fort Calhoun, Stockard's Trailers in Dunlap, Hedstrom Concrete in Woodbine and he helped Bob Katzenberger and Bob Brock with farming.
Melvin was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. He loved to visit and he also enjoyed Farmall tractors and horses.
Melvin died on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 79 years, eleven months, and one day.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anna on June 1, 2005; son Roger Wendt in 1960; and daughter, Joyce McFerrin on November 17, 2005. He is survived by his; four children, Joleen & husband Robert Lueth of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Carolyn & husband Denny Baxter of David City, Nebraska, Evelyn Summerfield of Dunlap, Iowa and Randy Wendt & wife Robbie of Woodbine, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; son-in-law, Sonny McFerrin of Modale, Iowa; sister, Ornella Malone of Dunlap, Iowa; brother, Marvin Wendt of Arion, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
