Muriel Mary Houston
Muriel was born on September 21, 1908 in Carroll, IA, to parents John and Mary (Murphy) Egan. In 1912, she moved with her family to the Dunlap area, where her son Jerry and his family now live. She attended the St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Dunlap High School. She then attended and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and taught school in Council Bluffs and Dow City school systems.
On June 15, 1940, she married Gerald L. Houston and to this union three children were born. Richard, Jerry and Janice. The couple moved to their family farm in 1940 and lived there until 1967 when they moved into Dunlap. Gerald died on August 22, 1988.
In 1993, due to health problems Muriel became a resident of the Dunlap Care & Rehab Center. She never refused an outing to spend the day with family or friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to her as was the annual 4th of July celebration at her Dunlap home.
She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, Entre Nous and the Busy Neighbors Club. She had held the positions of the Grand Region of the Catholic Daughters and President of the Altar Society.
Muriel died August 15, 2002 at the Dunlap Care & Rehab Center in Dunlap, IA at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 25 days.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald and four brothers, Leo, Clarence, Albert and Charles. Muriel is survived by three children, Richard Houston & wife Jean of Dunlap, IA, Jerry Houston & wife Joni of Dunlap, IA and Janice Arrick of Missouri Valley, IA; 7 grandchildren, Jeff Houston & wife Sheila, Ken Pieretti & wife Jill, Randy Houston & wife Tari, Denise Arrick, Pam & husband John McCall, Jennifer Houston and Susan & husband Mark Thompson and 10 great grandchildren, Brian & Emily Houston, Brook, Breann & Bryce Pieretti, Zachary, Nicholas & Kyle Houston, Taylor & Jenna McCall.
