Nancy Carlene Kirk was born on October 8, 1934, to Carl and Hazel (Judd) Kirk near Dunlap, Iowa, on the family farm. She grew up in the Dunlap area. She graduated from Dunlap High School and then went to Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. While in college Nancy pledged to the Alpha Sigma Sorority group. She also remained a very active member of the Morningside Alumni all through her life. In college Nancy did her student teaching in Moorhead, Iowa. She also taught in Peterson, Iowa before going to California.

In 1959 Nancy moved to California after being recruited by the California Department of Education. She enrolled in Long Beach State College, then became employed as a teacher in the Anaheim, California area. Nancy continued her education in California, obtaining a Masters Degree in Education while working. Nancy was employed as an elementary school teacher until her retirement in the 1990’s.  

Nancy loved to read novels, get together with her friends and traveling with her friends. Attended church at the Crystal Cathedral for many years and continued in church and religious activities all her life. Nancy came back to Dunlap every summer to visit family. Nancy enjoyed going to Arizona to visit with her brother Jim and his wife Shirley in the winter. She was a breast cancer survivor.

Nancy died on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at the UCI Health in Orange County, California at the age of 89 years, three months and 10 days.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ruth Ann Casperson. She is survived by her brother, Jim Kirk and his wife Shirley of Dunlap, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Bill Kirk and his wife Linda, Kathy and her husband Harold Melby, both of Dunlap, Iowa, Shelly and her husband Lee Whitmer of Boone, Iowa, Tony Casperson and his wife Connie and Karen Melby both of Dunlap, Iowa; cousin Edward Mohr and his wife Margaret of Los Angeles, California and many great nieces and nephews, former students and friends.

Memorial services will be held in Dunlap at a later date.
